PFO Lily Rerort 2005 (July 4th, 2006)

Asako Tominaga

We’ve recieved the report about last year’s sale(dealing) situation of cut lily in Netherlands from Onings, and would like to introduce it. The situation seems to be quite different from Japan.

In 2005 the prices of the Oriental lilies were higher. A wide assortment is wanted. Most new varieties have beautiful strong leaves, a strong facelife and are easy to transport, but because of the slow breeding process, it takes a while for the top 10 to change.

The market of the Longliflorum lilies was losing grip, because the supply was very irregular last year. Till week 17 the supply of ‘White Heaven’ increased with 150%, causing the price for other varieties to shrink. Although varieties like ‘Worldwhite’ and ‘White Europe’ were regular supplied, the fast increasing supply of ‘White Heaven’ and free cultivars like ‘Pausini’ were putting the market off balance. The import of Longliflorums to Israel increased, the import to Spain descended.

Because of the good prices of the Asiatic lilies, the prices were comparable with the good prices of 2003 and were levelling the prices of 2002, the latest ‘good’ year for Asiatics. A positive year, although the quality of the bulbs were not as good as the bulbs of the year before.

The assortment and prices of the LA-hybrids were changing constantly last year. Pale coloured LA’s were moving to the background. ‘Brindisi’ with his dark pink colour is now in the top 5 as successor of ‘Algarve’. A not fast opening flower and straight up standing buds at the top of the stem are priorities of making new LA varieties. Competition has been found in the direct delivery from Africa, especially in England. Due to the lowing offer of Asiatics, the price of LA-hybrids are growing.
