2011 NL Crop Situation Report (2011/8/5)

Keigo Nakamura

Thank you very much for your usual cooperation.
2 months have passed since we send you the first stock list of 2011 NL crop. After the earthquake you must have had long time not being able to estimate the next situation of Japan, and plan the business. In spite of this hard time, so far we have fortunately received as many orders as last year, which there were more orders than usual years. We will sincerely do our best to come up to your expectations.
Here we would like to report planting statistics and climates of Holland as an interim report.

1. Planting acreage statistics of NL crop

The total acreage is increasing from 2009 which were the smallest as below.
Scale area is much increasing and it seems that bulb growers have good expectations to NL crop 2012. Also, we estimate that quality improvement and renovation to new varieties will step forward.

The comparative of commercial and salable size of the main hybrids to the previous year is as below;

-Oriental hybrid which were thought to increase significantly decreased by 3% against the estimation.
-OT hybrid is increasing at this point, but influence of the late frost in early May is concerned.
-AZ and LA changed as expected.

Here is the data of the area of normal growing for Orientals + OT and LA + Asiatic in last 5 years.

The production amount dropped in 2008-2009 which were the years of “Lehman Shock”, but it started to go up last year. One of the reasons why Oriental Hybrids decreased even though it was assumed to increase can be said that there was long term frost on harvesting period (November ? December) in 2010, and there were planting materials which could not be harvested.
The bulb growers have already sold most of both Oriental Hybrids and OT to traders and this made Dutch prices stable after early spring.

2. Climates in The Netherlands
This is the data of climates in each month in the Netherlands.

MARCH – APRIL (Planting period) : Good weather and finished planting earlier than usual
MAY- JUNE : Warmer than usual, good growing

● The temperature dropped in July, and we can say it was a cool summer.
Sometimes the minimum temperature reached cooler than 10 degree Celsius.
They had rain more than usual in mid and late July, so the sunshine duration
was lower too.

3. Test of Growing in Hot Season
Please let us inform you a little bit of our growing test in summer season which we are now challenging.
This is for observation of tolerance to high temperature of summer varieties, promotion of “rooting method” with rooting stockers last year, and precise adjustment this year.
We are also planning a late forcing test in early September with as many varieties as “Lily Festa” (this is practically a growing test in summer).
We are looking forward to your visit from all over Japan.
