Report of trip to New Zealand(7/15/2011)

Keigo Nakamura

Thank you for your highly associated cooperation.
I left Chile, Santiago at 24:00 on Saturday, and arrived at Auckland in New Zealand in the early morning on Monday.
Here I report you that New Zealand’s harvesting situation and etc, during my trip from July 11th to 15th.

-Good enlargement, powerful bulbs-

This season was roughly as follows.

Spring Only early planting time was rain, but after, planting went well and finished earlier than last year.
Summer Sometime little low temperature, but generally good weather. (Reference: report on Feb 8th)
Autumn Early frost at beginning of April, then it turned warm till May, and growth continued.
Winter Less rain like never before, temperature was also warm. Harvesting went well.

Because planting was relatively earlier and warm autumn, growing period was longer, and enlargement tends to be good.
Same as Chile, I was worry of too good enlargement, but now it’s not so much as small size become shortage.

Frost in early April was mainly occurred at Rakaia Area, and some of 1 year production varieties got influenced to stop enlargement.

Harvesting was done two third now, each company expect to finish harvesting in 10 days about.

Following table is result of sprout checking and comparing to last year. (Checking time has 2 weeks difference)

Bulb size Out scale Inner scale Sprout length Sprout size Leafs Stem length Stem width
2011, mid of July 17.1㎝ 10.5 19.5 35.4㎜ 11.2㎜ 48.8 19.0㎜ 5.9㎜
11/10 % 100% 104% 98% 114% 119% 110% 120% 110%
2010, end of June 17.1㎝ 10.1 19.8 31.1mm 9.4㎜ 44.3 15.8㎜ 5.4㎜

○By the warm Autumn, middle temperature had been long, and sprout development went further.

○Sprout height is still controlled by less temperature fluctuation and frost in this winter, but sprout is enough swelling in tight bulb, especially width of sprout is very big.

○Sprout development and buds count is related, so this year must be powerful.

Since end of June to 1st week of July seemed the coldest in this winter. But when I visited in 2nd week of July had been 12-15 degrees like spring.
It’s good weather, good crop result and harvesting schedule is also going faster. NZ growers were in the relax mood, but this year s sprout development is moving faster as well, so should be more careful.
Picture is sprouting bulbs in the soil, which is only one accident.

By the researches in this time, We manage the quality and safe transportation, which will support your lily flower production.
At the end, I appreciate all the people cooperated to my visit in spite of very busy time.
(Some people feel missing that the other Japanese had not visited NZ for recent many years.)
